DIY Methods To Clean Mold & Algae Around Your Home

Do you have some outdoor furniture or a small sidewalk that’s growing mold and algae on it?

Are you a DIY kind of person? Or maybe what you need cleaned is to small to call a professional.

Good news is that you can keep the power washer in the garage.

The simple way to clean algae and mold in an outside environment is bleach, water, soap, and a pump sprayer.

Example, mix 1 part bleach to 2 part water and 2 ounces of gain dish soap (bleach alternative soap) in a 1 gallon pump sprayer and start cleaning.

  • You’ll want to wear clothes you don’t care about, as no matter how careful you are it will bleach your clothes!

  • Wear Eye protection & a respirator for your own protection

It’s time to start cleaning

Sidewalks - Spray your sidewalks with the pump sprayer, use a brush and scrub for 10 minutes. Rinse off the sidewalk with a garden hose. After the sidewalk is rinsed it is time to “post treat” which is simply respraying the sidewalk with the bleach solution. This time you will not rinse it, leave it! The cleaning solution will brighten and continue to clean the concrete for hours.

Outdoor Furniture - Contrary to what we all have been told regarding bleach and fabrics, bleach will not stain outdoor furniture fabric, which makes it a great choice if your cleaning algae and mold infested outdoor furniture. Whether you are cleaning fabric or plastic outdoor chairs, simply spray on the cleaning solution, let it set for 10 minutes and then rinse off with a garden hose.

Are They Really A Professional?

Hiring a service professional can be a daunting task, especially if them coming to your home is required for the task at hand. We have all experienced or heard of horror stories from scam artist to uninsured hack jobs. Those stories can make future hiring seem impossible, stressful, and very uncomfortable.

Years ago people would just call the Better Business Bureau to check on a companies background, but in 2019 there are better and more accurate ways to do that. Contrary to most peoples understanding, Better Business Bureau is not a Government regulatory division. BBB is a private company that sells “memberships” to businesses for a large amount of money in order to be “accredited”. Be cautious of taking the BBB accreditation with any value when making your hiring decisions.

THINGS TO CHECK

Screen-Shot-2018-04-02-at-1.16.24-PM-1024x506.png
  • Google Reviews - Simply google the companies business name and their “Google My Business Page” should show up. This will show reviews, pictures, and other info. Google reviews will help you see what past customers experience have been with that company. Google is very strict on spam reviews, and monitors IP addresses email accounts to ensure the authenticity of the review.

  • Facebook Reviews - Any business in 2019 should have a Facebook business page, and therefore should have reviews/recommendations from past customers talking about heir experience.

  • Insurance - Ask the company for Certificates Of Insurance for General Liability, Workmens Comp, and Commercial Auto. If a company has all three of these, its a good indicator that they are abiding by laws and doing things the correct way.

Hopefully going into 2020 you will feel more confident in hiring service professionals to care for your home. Whether its a repair for your washer machine, lawn care, or an in-ground pool install, past customers have documented their experiences on Google or Facebook for you to see.

Looking into 2020

The pressure washing season is over for us in 2019 but over the next few months we are working on building systems and automating our estimating process. This will be done to improve the customer experience in the initial communication and estimation process.

Going into 2020 we understand that customers want pricing NOW and the ability to schedule NOW, not in 24 hours (our old policy) or in a few days (most of our "competitors").

Starting in 2020 we will have new software that will allow us to provide instant quotes and scheduling through our website with just a few questions.

Our goal is with as little as 2 minutes and a few clicks a customer can see our pricing, choose services, and schedule their appointment.

In order to do this, we have consolidated our most popular services into pre built packages with a few extras.

We look forward to providing our services to Kalamazoo, Portage, Mattawan area residents once again!
